A STEM cell donation campaign to find a donor for a five-year-old boy with leukaemia is coming to Hereford this week.
Oscar Saxelby-Lee from Worcester was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia just after Christmas last year.
He was immediately admitted to Birmingham Children's Hospital, where he has received a rigorous regime of intense chemotherapy.
But after four weeks of treatment, the family received the news that Oscar's leukaemia was too aggressive to be treated with just chemotherapy, and that he would urgently need a stem cell transplant.
A global appeal has been made to find a donor match for Oscar.
Last week over 400 Worcester students inspired by Oscar's appeal joined the Anthony Nolan stem cell register, which matches potential stem cell donors to blood cancer patients.
The campaign is now being widened, with a Herefordshire donor recruitment day set to take place from 10am to 4pm on March 27 at Herefordshire and Ludlow College on Folly Lane, Hereford.
The campaign is calling upon people, particularly young men aged 16 to 30, to consider submitting a mouth swab match test by attending the event or joining the register online at https://www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save-life/donate-your-stem-cells
Family friend Lin Forward, who is helping to organise the event, said: "I'm hoping we can add to the thousands that have already registered.
"It would be a miracle if we can find that special match on the 27th, for one of the many people, like Oscar, fighting blood cancer."
