A HEADTEACHER who has been praised for working “tirelessly to turn things around” has been nominated for an award.

Mark Pollard, 44, has been headteacher at Bishop Perowne C of E School for almost four years.

It is Mr Pollard’s first headship, although he has been in the teaching profession for 21 years.

He has been nominated for Headteacher of the Year award in the Worcestershire Education Awards.

He said: “I feel very humble because the turnaround at Bishop Perowne has been a huge team effort. It’s been my job to grow the vision and drive the improvement, but others have been hugely instrumental in delivering for the young people we serve.”

The school in Merriman’s Hill Road, Worcester, has been nominated for Secondary School of the Year in the Worcestershire Education Awards. Bishop Perowne was rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in its latest inspection in October 2018, following its previous ‘inadequate’ rating in February 2017.

Mr Pollard added: “The school has been on a huge journey and I am delighted that the work we started nearly four years ago is now really paying off for the students in outcomes and in a culture that is positive and focussed.”

Mr Pollard says his job role is the greatest challenge he has been faced with professionally, adding: “I have learned so many things over the last four years, things that only experience can teach you. No two days are ever the same which is the great thing about my role.”

Tracie Carter, who nominated Mr Pollard, said in the nomination form: “Mr Pollard has worked tirelessly to turn things around at Bishop Perowne. He has dealt with any issues head on and built a team around him that have focussed on turning around the school’s fortunes.”
