A REDDITCH businessman took to the streets of London on the weekend as part of the People’s Vote campaign, along with his bagpipes.

John Kane, 59, joined hundreds of thousands of people in central London calling for another EU referendum, as MPs search for a way out of the Brexit impasse.

Organisers of the "Put It To The People" campaign say more than a million people joined the march before rallying in front of Parliament.

John is the boss of family housing company, Liam Kane Properties.

His company provides rooms in shared houses across Redditch and he is the town’s first accredited landlord.

Originally from Scotland and a keen bagpipe player, Mr Kane, complete with kilt, entertained the crowd during the march from Marble Arch via Trafalgar Square to the Palace of Westminster.

The Church Hill resident, who has lived in Redditch for over 20 years, even stopped at Downing Street to give the Prime Minister his own rendition of the Euro anthem, Ode to Joy.

“I do hope Mrs May was listening,” said Mr Kane.

“My bagpipe playing was clearly in tune with the crowd and even the armed police outside Downing Street found it amusing."

“Whilst there was a carnival atmosphere on the march, there is a serious side to my efforts.

"Over half of my tenants are from overseas, mostly from EU countries. They are nurses, care staff and factory workers that this town depends on for its health and prosperity. If we were to crash out of Europe with no deal, then Redditch would be much poorer and it’s possible that many businesses, including my own, would suffer badly.

“But the overall feeling I got from the people I talked to on the march was hope for the future. It’s not to late to save our country and our town from self-imposed poverty and chaos.”
