THE great nephew of former Liberal Democrat grandee Sir Simon Hughes is standing for election on the county and city councils.

Daniel Powell, 20, who is contesting the Red Hill ward, has had a helping hand from the party’s former deputy leader.

The former MP for Bermondsey and old Southwark was out canvassing in Hereford with his nephew over the weekend.

Mr Powell, who studied at Hereford Sixth Form College, said despite politics being in his bloodline it is not something that he has been forced into.

“My mother and father aren’t massive political animals, but it’s something I have always enjoyed and cared about,” he said.

“My great uncle is who he is, but I’ve got into politics off my own back.”

The former justice minister was elected as a councillor on the Greater London Councillor before becoming an MP.

“All the family is thrilled that my nephew is standing for Redhill,” Sir Simon said.

“I’m certain that Danny will do well and do a really good job in representing Red Hill and the issues and comments raised.

“He will be a great councillor bringing new energy and ideas to the council.”

Mr Powell says he has found a positive response while door knocking.

“The main issues that have come up from canvassing are safer roads, calls for the bypass to be built, more affordable housing, saving the Broadleys pub and getting a better play area and community centre built,” he said.

“People also believe there should be greater police presence in the area.

“A lot of elderly and young residents feel nervous when they are out and about at night.

Mr Powell says the county needs a change of direction.

“In the 20 years I’ve been living in Herefordshire things have been getting worse.”
