The soundtrack of a generation will be heard in live performances at The Artrix in Bromsgrove, with a Summer of Love Celebration.

Organisers say it will be “the greatest 60s party in town” as the clocks go back to 1967 when it seemed, for one brief moment only, that music might just be able to change the world for good.

And perhaps it did, because the music and the memories live on.

Artrix press officer, Eleanor Miles said the show would be “an eclectic explosion of flowers, psychedelia, freedom, peace and love and, of course, timeless music that inspired a generation”.

She added: “Summer Of Love features all the hits from one of music’s most influential eras, including California Dreaming, San Francisco, Turn Turn, Turn, Somebody To Love, Happy Together, Brown Eyed Girl, All Along The Watchtower and more than 40 classic songs from the summer that changed the world.

“With original 1960s film footage, incredible vocalists and a world class live band, Summer Of Love is the ultimate 60s party.”

The Summer of Love is perhaps remembered now as a time of great weather and brilliant music wherever people were, although in reality London and San Francisco were where “the scene was really happening”, at least to begin with.

It was in 1967 that hippies began to flock in numbers to San Francisco, “with flowers in their hair”, just as the famous song said, while in the UK the UFO Club in Tottenham Court Road,London, was booking psychedelic bands including Pink Floyd and the Soft Machine.

The UK’s first ever rock festival took place on Spalding, Lincolnshire.

In the US, the Monterey Pop Festival took place in June 1967, attracting 60,000 people on the final day.

Iconic bands at Monterey included The Who, Grateful Dead, the Animals, Jefferson Airplane, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Otis Redding and The Byrds.

The Summer Of Love comes to Artrix on Saturday June 8.
