A SEVEN-year-old girl has raised funds for a charity which was created in memory of her grandfather who had cancer.

The S.M.I.L.E Charitable Foundation was set up 10 months ago, in memory of Edward Henry, who passed away 16 years ago.

The charity aims to host events to raise money, which will then be donated to individuals or groups who can apply for a grant through the organisation.

Mr Henry’s three children - Tori, Katie and Jack – who formed the charity, were inspired to choose the name after browsing through old photographs.

Tori Tregear, aged 36 said: “When looking through the photos there was no moment when anyone felt sad. He always brought a smile to our face and that’s why we chose the name.”

The first charity event was held on July 17, which would have marked Mr Henry’s 60th birthday, by his granddaughter, Libby Tregear, from Worcester. Libby organised a cake sale at her school, Broadwas Primary School, and raised £115.75.

The money has been donated to the Riverbank children's ward at Worcestershire Royal Hospital for sensory equipment. This follows Libby’s 18-month old brother, William, who has received care from the hospital as he suffers from problems with his breathing.

Mrs Tregear said: “Libby didn’t meet her grandad, so she often asks about him. She wanted to do something in memory of him and to mark his 60th birthday. We are so proud of her.

“He was incredibly generous and such a kind person. We wanted to do something positive from something so negative. It’s lovely to make a difference and to offer help to those who need it.

“There are so many children in Worcester who benefits from the hospital.”

Alison Northover, a teacher from Broadwas Primary School said: "Libby’s fundraising idea was lovely and we were all very happy to support her. We are delighted that she raised so much money from her bake sale and are very proud of her."

Dana Picken, matron for children’s services said: “We are so grateful to Libby and her family for the generous donation. We are all so impressed with her fundraising efforts, the fantastic amount she has raised and the wonderfully tasty cakes. The money Libby has raised will go towards purchasing sensory toys and equipment.”
