TRIBUTES have been paid to a Hereford bellringer who died just weeks away from her 109th birthday.

Dorothy Beavan was the 35th oldest person living in the UK, born in August 1910 in Cardiff.

Mrs Beavan stayed with her parents in the Welsh capital until 1938 and was taught by her father to ring the church bells at St Mary's Church, where she also got married.

A tailoress by trade, Mrs Beavan moved to Ross-on-Wye where she continued working with her vast amount of sewing knowledge as she made te uniforms for three schools in the town.

In the late 1970s, Mrs Beaven moved to Hereford, but kept up her bellringing until she turned 80.

She moved into Stretton Nursing Home at 103, and sadly passed away on July 24.
