A DAD-of-two is determined to take on ‘Britain’s hardest walk’ despite being terminally ill with cancer.

Martyn Wells, aged 50, has been living with incurable cancer since 2017.

Despite his diagnosis with malignant melanoma, he is determined to complete the Cape Wrath Trail, which is an epic 245-mile walk through North-west Scotland from Fort William to Cape Wrath.

Mr Wells, from Worcester, will take on the challenge in only a matter of weeks.

He will face extreme peaks ascending over 45,000ft and conditions which the Scottish wilderness has to offer, with no signposts or paths to direct him along the way.

He said: “I only have four weeks to go now and I have to admit, I’m pretty nervous.

“I have a lot more work to put into my training between now and September but I’m very proud of what I’m doing so far, especially given I was on a life support machine only four months ago.”

He has challenged himself to not only complete the mission, which is described as Britain's toughest long-distance walk, but to also complete it in 10 days – which no one has ever done in such a short time frame before.

Only a matter of months ago, Mr Wells was fighting for his life on an intensive care unit after developing pneumonia and chest sepsis.

Mr Wells has been training in the Worcestershire countryside, walking along parts of Worcestershire Way.

He added: "It goes without saying that the Worcestershire Way does not give me the 40,000ft of vertical ascent I will face during the Cape Wrath Trail, but it still helps to get a few miles in to get used to the full pack I’ll be wearing on my back which weighs about 15kg.”

He is taking part in the challenge next month, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

As well as completing the walk to boost funds for his cause, he will also be hosting a summer ball at Worcestershire County Cricket Club on Saturday, August 17.

There will be food served with cuisines from around the world.

Guests will receive a glass of prosecco on arrival.

Ball goers will be able to enjoy a disco will on the night as well as other entertainment.
