A SCHOOL has been named as a National Centre of Excellence and recognised for its work with pupils who are at risk of exclusion.

The Senior Leadership Team from Perryfields Primary PRU picked up the Inclusive Quality Mark (IQM) award at an awards ceremony.

Headteacher Peter Hines said: “All of the staff and governors are delighted to receive this recognition for what is a fantastic team effort in helping change the lives of vulnerable young people.”

The school will now work closely with a group of other national schools to promote and share good practice and develop their provision further.

Rob Harrison, deputy head and IQM lead, said: “Inclusion promotes equal opportunities for all pupils, whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, attainment and background. It pays particular attention to the provision made for, and the achievement of, different groups of pupils within a school and any pupils who are at risk of disaffection and exclusion.

“Everything we do here at Perryfield’s Primary PRU is about inclusion and it is nice to have some national recognition of all the hard work the staff, governing body and local authority have put in to supporting some of the most vulnerable pupils.”

Along with educating pupils onsite, Perryfields provides behaviour support to 111 primary, first and middle schools in South Worcestershire.

The school in St John’s, Worcester, was inspected on April 10 by IQM officer Steve Byatt. In the report it said: “The tour of the school provided evidence of a highly stimulating and cared-for environment, with examples of pupil’s artwork- some in conjunction with commissioned artists, images of off-site activities- and prominent display of the school’s vision: ‘To enjoy learning, to enjoy being together and wanting to return to mainstream.’

“Classrooms, corridors and outdoor spaces provide important messages in establishing and reinforcing pupil self-esteem and confidence- attributes often absent in pupils on their entry to the school.”

The ceremony was held at The Institute of directors building in London’s Pall Mall on September 17.
