THE school of a student who is battling against leukaemia has held a special day for him to raise funds for lifesaving treatment.

Pitmaston Primary School has hosted an ‘Oscar day’ for the five-year-old. The day raised over £2,500 which will go towards Oscar Saxelby-Lee’s CAR-T cell therapy.

The treatment, which he desperately needs, is currently unavailable on the NHS with doctors saying Oscar has a three-to-five-week window to travel to Singapore for the costly lifeline.

The children and staff from the school, in Malvern Road, were dressed in home clothes and took part in activities throughout the day.

Headteacher Kate Wilcock said: “It’s been another completely overwhelming day. We’ve been stood on the gates this morning with donation buckets and wearing ridiculous wigs. Parents and children have literally been giving us so much money this morning.

“It’s been really emotional seeing children bring me their money boxes from home. It gives you goosebumps. It’s just incredible.”

Sergeant Major Mark Wall of the 214 (Worcestershire) Battery the Royal Artillery, is completing the length of a marathon for seven consecutive days.

He said: “The reason I’m doing seven marathons in seven days is because if I did one marathon it’s over in one day. The idea of seven is longevity for the week and attracts people’s attention and also highlights Oscar’s case more.

“This is all about Oscar. It’s simple. We need your money as quick as possible to get Oscar the treatment in Singapore so he can experience the rain, sun, beach and sea for the rest of his life. We need every penny as quick as possible.”

Oldbury Park School also took part in an Oscar day.

Students and staff worn their home clothes and donated money to help fund Oscar’s treatment.

Headteacher Sarah Boyce said: “There’s been an overwhelming sense of helping of support today. Everybody is doing this for the same reason.

“Parents, grandparents and even children have giving their own pocket money.

“It was brilliant. It’s been absolutely fantastic.

“Thank you to everybody for supporting Oscar. We are thinking of him every day.”

The school, in Oldbury Road, raised £1,350.
