A HEADTEACHER has had his hair shaved off to raise vital funds for a Worcester schoolboy who has touched the community’s heart.

Andrew Richards, head of Grimley and Holt C of E Primary School, braved the shave on Friday, October 4 in front of pupils and staff in a bid to boost funds for Oscar Saxelby-Lee’s urgent appeal.

Mr Richards said: “My daughter and her fiancé had done something similar and as soon as Oscar’s situation was published, the thought came into my head and I couldn’t ignore it.

“The response from the community and children for Oscar has been amazing.

"The children have definitely been touched by his story and that of his family – we are all so proud of them.

"The amount of money that some of the kids have collected has been mind-blowing.”

Throughout the week staff and students have taken part in activities and made donations to contribute towards Oscar’s appeal.

There was a bake off where children designed and brought in their own cakes, a cake sale and non-uniform day.

The children went around with a donation box at church during their service and appealed for funds from churchgoers.

So far, £2,012.74 has been raised from the school.

Mr Richards added: “One of the children emptied their money box and gave £200.

“Some of the things the children have said has been so touching. It’s become their second nature to ask about Oscar and how he is. The students have been asking how old he is and whether he will be paying a visit to the school.

“They are saying such emotive things and every time they see a picture of Oscar they say what a lovely boy he looks.”

Another headteacher who has braved the shave was Mike Painter, from Cherry Orchard Primary, in Timberdine Close. Mr Painter had his hair shaved off in the school’s playground on Friday and raised £2,511.25.
