A 44-year-old man remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday.

The arrest came after the body of a 25-year-old woman was found in Causeway Lane, near Upton fire station.

The woman's next of kin has been informed.

Police cordoned off an area near to Upton fire station and extra officers attended the area.

The police said they were called at around 8am yesterday morning.

Detective Inspector Jim Bayliss said: “Our enquiries are very much in their early stages and at this stage the woman’s death is being treated as suspicious.

"A man has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

“Extra officers will be in the area, both to carry out enquiries and to offer reassurance.”

Brian Green who lives next to the fire station said: "I didn't hear anything last night or this morning, I didn't really know. It is a shock. It's always a shock when something like that happens. This is a quiet area normally. We have had a few incidents with drunks outside the club sometimes in the last couple of years.

"I am very sorry to hear about it."
