I’M concerned about the Wuhan virus.

It's proved to be deadly and highly contagious so far.

The NHS has stated at least 2,000 people in recent weeks have travelled to the UK from Wuhan.

This is a large number.

The BBC have reported the death toll in China has reached 81 as I write this (January 27) and, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 44 outside of the country.

I wrote a story at the end of last week on the virus outlook for Worcestershire and I was pleased to learn of the hard work by medics going on behind the scenes.

Experts from Public Health England are monitoring the situation closely, providing information to health authorities.

This is something medics prepare for.

Experts have said the virus has already reached the UK mainland and the Government is looking at getting UK nationals out of Wuhan, China.

However, it’s important to put the virus into perspective and not get carried away with hysteria.

We need to put our faith in the experts and not get too carried away with any over exaggerated media reports in the national media outlets.

I guess I’m just a bit of a hypochondriac and I know people arriving in the country will be screened at the border but I’ve read the incubation period is around two weeks, meaning someone can be a carrier but not showing any symptoms.

There is a lack of data at the moment but it is known to be transmitted from person to person.

I believe front line care workers could be the most at risk but having worked in that industry, I know all the precautions in place to safeguard both patients and workers.

It also seems to be greater concern to people who have a problem with their immune system and older people who are generally more frail.

I'm trying not to panic too much but each day I'm keeping a close eye on all media sources relating to the Wuhan virus not only for a potential news angle for Worcester but also to look for any information to allow me to avoid it.

Rest assured, as soon as I get any information relating to the virus coming to Worcester, I'll be writing a story for our readers.
