AN alleged sex attacker put his fingers to the lips of a drunk teenager and whispered 'shhhhh' before assaulting an 'older woman' as she lay asleep in bed, a witness told a jury.

Daniel Edwards denies two counts of assault by penetration and another of trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence. One assault is alleged to have taken place in an alleyway off Cranham Drive, Warndon, Worcester between 2008 and 2011. The complainant says she was between the ages of 13 and 15 when Edwards sexually assaulted her as she gave him a backie on her friend's bike from Pizza Allegro. Another complainant, a woman in her 40s, says Edwards sexually assaulted her as she lay in her own bed in her Warndon flat in the summer of 2013.

Edwards, 28, previously of Langdale Drive, Warndon, Worcester (the court has declined to provide his current address), accepts entering her home through an open kitchen window but denies assaulting her, claiming he was looking for somewhere to stay because he was locked out of his own home.

A witness who was staying at the alleged victim's house that night told the jury she woke up to a male standing in her room. She said: "He put his finger on my lips and said 'shhhhhh'."

She said she must have gone back to sleep, telling the jury: "I thought I must have been dreaming."

The next day the witness said the complainant told her what had happened to her in another bedroom in the flat. When cross-examined by Adam Western, for Edwards, she said: "I have no reason to lie."

She accepted she had previously confused two evenings when she had been staying with the complainant and accepted she had been drunk on both occasions.

The older of the two complainants first mentioned the alleged sexual assault to police in August 2016 when she reported her neighbour for theft. An interview about the alleged sexual assault was recorded by police on January 26, 2017.

Transcripts of Edwards's three police interviews on October 10, 2016, July 6, 2017 and October 14, 2017 were read out to the jury. Edwards said the complainant told him: "What are you doing here? Get out."

He estimated he was in her flat less than two minutes, leaving by the same window through which he had entered because he could not find a key. He described himself as 'tipsy' but added: "I weren't really, really drunk."

The defendant accepted shaking the complainant by the arm to wake her up but denied any sexual assault. Edwards told officers: "I climbed in through the window - silly old me."

He added: "If I could go back I would slap myself on the head and say 'that's a silly thing to do'."

Edwards also told officers: "It's her word against mine. I think she's doing this to punish me for climbing through her window."

Edwards further denied the assault involving the girl in the alleyway, saying he would not have done that to a young girl.

When asked by police if he thought the allegation was 'malicious' he replied: "Yes, I do, yes."

The mother of this complainant also gave evidence, telling the jury: "I know for a fact my daughter told me what happened and I believe her" she said.

The trial continues.
