THE former home of Droitwich's British Legion could soon be demolished to make way for new homes.

The former Royal British Legion club off Salwarpe Road, which had last been taken over by Cannon Royall Brewery and used as a pub called the Legion Inn, closed suddenly in 2016 and has been vacant since.

The largely single-storey building would be demolished to make way for a three-and-four-storey apartment building filled with 22 flats under the new plans.

A total of 15 one-bed and seven two-bed flats would be built.

A statement included with the application said: "The proposals will provide a social benefit, increasing housing choice in a sustainable location and improving an area which is eventually likely to cause property blight and result in anti-social behaviour.

"Further, the site is owned by the Royal British Legion, who will utilise the profits from the sale of the site to re-invest in community projects in line with their aims and objectives.

"The proposals will demolish and regenerate a site which is ecologically of low value.

"We consider the proposals are aligned to the relevant parts of the development plan and the highlighted material considerations. They will provide new homes for smaller households in a highly sustainable location.

"The site, which has been vacant for some time will be brought back into a positive use where it is unconstrained by ecology, trees, and heritage matters.

"The constraints associated with noise can be mitigated through a series of measures and careful design. To that end, we urge you to view these proposals favourably. "
