A CYCLIST was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after a collision on a major Dudley road.

Police were called to reports of a collision involving a cyclist and a broken down van on Duncan Edwards Way, at around 8.45pm on Tuesday night (May 12).

On arrival it was found the 62-year-old cyclist had suffered a cardiac arrest and he received advanced life support by medics at the scene.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham in a critical condition where he was found to have spinal injuries.

West Midlands Police say at present there is no suggestion that another car was involved.

An investigation has been launched to find out exactly what happened and the occupant of the van, which was broken down at the time, is helping officers with the ongoing enquiry.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is a shocking collision. The cyclist remains in a very serious condition and the full extent of the damage to his spine is not yet known.

“It’s not yet clear how he came to sustain such significant injuries and my officers are working hard to establish what happened. I would urge anyone with any information about what happened, who was in the area at the time or possibly has dashcam footage to get in touch.

“As always our thoughts are with the cyclist and his family and they’re being supported by specialist officers at this time."

A spokeswoman from West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 8:31pm last night to the junction of Dudley Southern Bypass and Flood Street in Dudley.

"We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer and BASICS doctor to the scene. On arrival we found a male cyclist in a critical condition. Crews administered advanced life support on scene before taking him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.”

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the area and saw what happened to get in touch.
