EVESHAM Golf Club captain John Machin secured the Peter Callaghan Trophy in the late summer sunshine at Evesham.

He scored a winning 42 points in a round that contained two birdies and 11 pars to reduce his handicap from 12 to 11.

Two shots back in second place was Pershore’s experienced Alan Dufty, relegating Brian Marshall into third spot on count-back with 40.

Veteran George Parker was fourth with 39 as 60 golfers competed in a stableford format for the trophy, which was donated to the club by Callaghan’s two sons after his death.

Unwelcome heavy rain washed out the second round of the Evesham seniors’ championship, leaving the competition to be decided by the scores from the first stage.

Ian Tait was well ahead of the field and his 79 gross 67 nett made him the winner of both the Diffin Trophy and the Wilson Jug.

Chasing him home for the trophy were runner-up Colin Cleary (86 gross) and Geoff Wellens (87).

Wellens was runner-up for the jug with 69 nett and Alan Groves (72) finished third.

Ian Facer finally secured a well-deserved win in the seniors’ Jubilee Cup.

With medal play off the white tees, Facer’s solid round of 90 gross 74 nett was enough to pip runner-up Richard Saville (75 nett) on count-back.

Also on 75 were Ken Hardacre and Dave Hartland.

Evesham ladies held a medal with Joan Hunt (78 points) topping Division One ahead of Lesley Curnock (85).

Division Two went to J Winter on count-back with 77 from Gill Smith, while Angela Fletcher (73) won Division Three followed by Eunice Allen (80).

Sixty-two Broadway men played the Tilbrook Cup in a strokeplay contest in memory of former club president, captain and secretary Ian Tilbrook.

With the threat of torrential rain looming, Stuart Sollis was triumphant with 68 nett and achieved best gross with 75.

Losing out on count-back were David Abbott in second position and the third-placed Kenny Campbell, with Ollie Storrer fourth on 69.

Broadway ladies competed with partners in the annual invitation with 48 playing in the better-ball contest through blustery winds and showers.

Home player Esther Pettitt and Hilary Mason, from Henbury in Bristol, won with 40 points from Sheila Lawson and Christina Macdonald, of Stratford-upon-Avon, on 39.

Third on 38 were Chris Parkinson and Sally Falconer-Hall, also from Henbury.

A raffle raised £152 to swell the lady captain’s charity fund for the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Trust.
