CRAIG Witheford and Beth Pye enjoyed success in the Worcestershire schools senior individual table tennis championships at Evesham’s St Egwin’s Middle.

Witheford from the town’s Prince Henry’s High flew through to the Butterfly national finals in Wolverhampton on April 21 as the boys’ under 19s champion.

Bredon Hill Academy’s Pye stepped up to win the under 16s event after being ill for the under 13s the week before and was also voted player of the tournament.

Witheford beat Hawley Ellicott from Heart of Worcestershire College, Redditch, in the final under 19s match to decide the champion.

Alvin Choi Wang Yang was third.

The girls competed in a round-robin format with all four from Bromsgrove School.

Karen Chu Kiu Yan was far too strong for her less experienced opponents, completing three comfortable victories.

Mill Sibunruang was second and Katie Ho third.

Pye was pitted against four girls from Bromsgrove School in the under 16s event and won all her matches.

Aida Abrahim was second and Saki Tsubuchi third.

The boys’ competition drew 11 entries.

Vladimir Averin (Bromsgrove) beat Jon Lyons (Prince Henry’s) 3-0 and Ali Witheford (Prince Henry’s) defeated Murat Shafigullin (Bromsgrove) 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Averin saw off Witheford 3-1 to win and Shafigullin beat Lyons 3-1 for third place.

Bromsgrove’s Solomon Wong claimed the plate competition.
