EVESHAM Archery Club's Jacquie Holmes overcame the odds to win Archery GB's flagship event for 2018.

Having competed at six qualifiers Holmes gained sufficient ranking points to progress in seventh place out of the eight invited to the end-of-year finals.

At Lilleshall Hall National Sports Centre, she beat Great Britain squad member Layla Annison in the quarter-finals with a nervy 140 points out of 150 after her highly-rated young opponent had a few technical issues.

There was steady rain during the semi-final as Holmes defeated Archery GB's Lucy O'Sullivan from Jersey on a one-arrow shoot-off by two millimetres after a comeback from the Evesham competitor saw them level on 139 each.

Holmes won the gold against United Kingdom number one Sarah Prieels.

As the lower-ranked archer, the Vale star shot first and eventually pipped her rival by one point.
