MANAGER Paul Collicutt feels brighter after reflecting on Evesham United’s start to the season – even if he still craves a more settled backline.

The Robins boss came under pressure after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Thatcham Town in Southern League Division One South – a fourth-straight home setback in all competitions.

Collicutt was called in for a meeting with chairman Jim Cockerton and vice-chair Dave Wright after the match and admitted today’s showdown with Highworth Town at the Jubilee Stadium (3pm) would be “must-win”.

In an emotional post-match address, Collicutt questioned whether modern footballers hurt as much as their gaffers after defeats but has since considered how an enforced lack of continuity in defence may have affected performances.

“It has been very difficult,” said Collicutt.

“The only player from my back five that has been available all season is Harvey (Rivers, goalkeeper), I have had injuries, suspensions, illness and work commitments to deal with.

“Shayne (Anson) is out for two to three months. He said on Sunday how he was gagging to play and I wish I had him out there.

“He is a robust player who is hands on. He will head or kick anything and that’s the one thing we’re lacking a bit.

“I have not been able to name a settled back four from the first week of the season and that has caused us problems, without doubt. You need continuity in there.”

Evesham still sit third in the table and will go top should they overcome Highworth, promoted from the Hellenic League last season. It is the division’s only fixture with other clubs on FA Trophy duty.

“I was talking to someone this week and they mentioned the turnaround of players we had over the summer as well,” added Collicutt.

“He said I should be happy to be in the position we are. When someone says it as bluntly as he did it made me wonder whether I had been too critical.”

Anson is joined by experienced pair Ashley Williams and Carl Brown on the long-term casualty list with defender Will Wellon suspended.

The fitness of Steve Davies and Nathan Summers will be assessed in the build-up. Will Tunnicliff should return from illness with Nick Humphreys available once more.

In Division One Central, Bromsgrove Sporting can move six points clear at the summit with victory at Barton Rovers (3pm).

The Rouslers have been busy in the transfer market this week with Barwell midfielder Jake Heath the latest to join.

“I would like to thank Barwell for their cooperation with the transfer,” said Bromsgrove boss Brendan Kelly.

“Jake is a tenacious player with an eye for goal, he will provide even more competition in our already-strong midfield.”
