HOSTS Droitwich Spa narrowly edged out Allscott 1-0 in West Midlands League Division One courtesy of a late James Lemon wonder-strike to return to top spot.

Allscott gave a strong account of themselves from start to finish as they were well organised, restricting Spa to just a handful of chances.

Droitwich did edge the possession but found a stubborn back-line hard to break down.

A strong wind played its part in the first half with visiting keeper Dan Pilkington having to deal with plenty of crosses, some more convincingly than others.

Lemon was denied at the far post and a sweet strike from the edge of the box by Jack Allerton went narrowly over.

Allscott had a chance to take the lead midway through the half as pacey winger Ryan McLean was put through on goal but keeper Matt Oliver saved well.

Ben Tilbury had the Saltmen's best chance of the game but put his shot wide when well positioned.

Droitwich had the better of the second half with the visitors rarely threatening.

Lemon should have scored with a close-range header which cannoned back off the post.

Both a Matty Hunt header and a Tilbury low shot did not trouble Pilkington.

Leon Bake and Max Marshall both had half-chances for Allscott but they could not capitalise.

With Spa turning the screw Lemon picked the ball up on the edge of the area, cut inside and fired a wicked shot that cannoned in off the inside of the post in the 83rd minute and Allscott's brave resistance was broken.

The visitors tried to force an equaliser late on but nothing materialised and Droitwich held out for three important points.
