BROMSGROVE’S “surreal” 240-0 thrashing of South Leicester has left rugby boffins thumbing through the record books.

The Boars ran in an astonishing 36 tries and landed 30 conversions in the Midlands Premier triumph at Finstall Park on Saturday.

Josh Holt notched six tries, Will Trumper scored five, Ed Spalding and Tom Sadler both registered four and Ross Attwood got a hat-trick. Will Harris and Bobby Scott-Walker shared the kicking duties.

It has yet to be confirmed as a British record but reports suggest the previous best happened in 2014 when Dorset Dockers trounced Dorchester II 212-0 in the Dorset & Wilts Two South.

Bromsgrove opened up a 108-0 lead at half-time and head coach Dan Protherough praised his players for refusing to take their foot off the pedal.

“It was a surreal experience to be honest,” Protherough said.

“We scored in the first play of the game and got four tries within the first seven minutes.

“To be fair to our boys they didn’t take their foot off the gas all game and that’s a testament to what we are trying to achieve and their professionalism.

“Fair play to South Leicester as they kept going. They had a couple of injuries so they ended the game with 13 men.

“But you can only beat what is in front of you and we made hardly any errors. It was a fantastic performance.”

South Leicester have now lost all seven games, conceding 923 points since being relagated from National Two.

“I’m not sure what the league record in English rugby is to be honest because I have never heard of a team winning by 240 points before,” Protherough said.

“We will see where it sits in that stratosphere.

“I personally felt for the South Leicester players and officials.

“They are not at this level as a side but you have to commend them for getting a team out every week.”
