Broadway Golf Club’s men were out in force at the weekend to compete in the fourth round of their Winter League contest. Keen to get out after the Christmas recess, all were eagerly awaiting the klaxon to signal the early shot-gun start.

It was a mild, bright morning and the course was playing exceptionally well, helping teams record some excellent scores in the Foursomes match.

With each team member driving on alternate holes and then continuing play with just one ball to the green, there was some impressive golf to be witnessed.

Kenny Campbell and partner Guy Madgwick made the best of conditions, earning a worthy first place with a tremendous 41 points ahead of Lee Jones and Stephen Oliver who eased into a close second with 40.

Also scoring 40 points but losing out to third on countback were Adam Barnfield and Dave Goodwin leaving Jim Hutchison and Paul Lankester to take a worthy fourth with 38.

All fifty pairs now look forward to round five later in the month when they can continue their ascent towards the top of the overall league table.

Following on from the Winter League, Broadway's new captains celebrated their inauguration with the annual Captains ‘Drive-in’.

Club captain, Phil Bennett; ladies captain Frances Friend; seniors captain Mike Whitfield and juniors captain Sonny Nangle were all determined to begin the new decade and their year of captaincy with magnificent drives in front of the gathered crowd.

Sonny was first on the tee and demonstrated all his youth and agility by sending his colossal drive off beyond the 250 yard marker.

Mike Whitfield was next in line executing a super shot way into the distance followed by Frances Friend who kicked off her year in style with a glorious drive to equal the quality of the others.

Club captain, Phil Bennett brought up the rear with a superb display of controlled driving, coolly dispatching the ball down the middle of the fairway. All then retired to the warmth of the clubhouse to enjoy the sumptuous new year’s carvery.
