MALVERN Town have added the talented Pershore Town midfielder Jake Cavens to their side for the upcoming 2022/23 season.

Cavens impressed throughout the 2021/22 campaign for The Plums and played 40 times as they went on to win a non-league cup treble.

Pershore boss Danny Janes had planned around the versatile midfielder being part of his squad for the new campaign and admitted the decision came as a slight surprise.

"Jake played a huge role in the success of the team last season, playing out of position a lot of time to cover areas where we suffered injuries," said Janes.

"We spoke about where he would play this season, and now that we have had time to build our own squad, he would have competed in his preferred position as we have sourced the depth required in all areas of the pitch.

"I was slightly surprised by the decision but I completely respect it and I wish him all the best at his new club."

Despite being part of Janes' plans, Cavens has been training at Malvern lately and has made an instant impact with boss Lee Hooper.

"It’s great to have Jake on board," said Hooper.

"He is a top lad that has a 100% attitude and has impressed everyone in sessions so far. He is comfortable on the ball and has a great work ethic.

"Jake played for Pershore last season, including a good display against us in the Smedley Crooke Memorial Cup Final.

"We believe he will play a big part in our campaign and look forward to working with him and developing him further as a player."

Cavens added that it was Hooper and assistant manager Stephen Cleal who played a big role in bringing him to the club.

"I’ve seen at first-hand the development that the club has gone through off-the-pitch with the fantastic facilities and the community engagement,"

"I know that on the pitch the team likes to play the right way and it shows how well things have gone having come so close to promotion last season season.

"The management had a big part to play in convincing me to come here; they have showed their confidence in me and that counts for a lot.

"The standard here is very high and it’s a close-knit group, which I am delighted to join.

"Hopefully I can bring some energy to the midfield as well as a calm and composed presence on the ball to help drive things forward."
