A GOAL in each half from striker Daniel Griffiths fired play-off chasing Evesham United to a much needed three points on Saturday at home to Willand Rovers.

Having struggled with consistency in recent weeks, Evesham were able to add further points in their play-off push.

Last weekend's result means they now sit two places and two points outside the top five, but they do have two games in hand on fifth placed Tavistock AFC.

It had been an uneventful opening to the game but Evesham sprung into life 16 minutes in when William Owens' excellent corner into the box was headed home from Griffiths.

The visitors did not spend too much time feeling sorry for themselves and actually went on to dominate the game for large parts after going behind.

Edward Brearey was forced into a top save in the 27th minute to deny a powerful shot on goal.

Evesham thought they had ended the half on a high when Owens had the ball in the back of the net, only for the offside flag to cut the celebrations short.

The 1-0 lead remained into the second-half before Griffiths grabbed a crucial second with 58 minutes on the clock.

He raced around the last man in defence before sliding the ball past the on-rushing keeper to double the lead.

Evesham then dug their heels in and saw out the game to secure a big three points for manager Mike Ford, who was a happy man at full-time.

"It was a really pleasing afternoon," he said.

"To be fair to them (Willand), I thought they were excellent. We scored and they dominated after that for the rest of the first-half and put us under pressure.

"It was a really tough encounter. But we kept a clean sheet and won the game 2-0 and it was a really important game for us to get the three points.

"Dan (Griffiths) has been left out the team recently for various reasons but it was a chance for him to get some minutes back under his belt.

"He's missed a couple of games due to circumstances, But Griff played really well and got a couple of goals and took the opportunity."
