Match Report: Evesham United 1 v Gosport Borough 3
A difficult day for Evesham Robins in their quest for survival in the Southern League Premier Division South saw them suffer a 3-1 defeat at home to Gosport Borough, writes Simon Purfield.
With vital wins for Yate Town, Taunton Town, and Weymouth, Evesham dropped into the bottom four for the first time this season, making their relegation battle even more precarious.
The game began at a frenetic pace, with Evesham’s captain Amer Awadh shooting wide in the opening minute after a promising team move. Gosport responded immediately, launching a long goal kick that put the Evesham defence under pressure; Brendan Beard was forced into a save, and the defence cleared for a corner.
Kai Churchley delivered a cross that narrowly missed Ethan Dunbar in the area. On ten minutes, Gosport created another chance, but their forward fired past the right post.
The hosts continued to pile on the pressure. In the 12th minute, Churchley played the ball inside to Dunbar, whose first-time shot was pushed away by Gosport’s goalkeeper Lucas Thomas. Not long after, Jyrel Bojang’s low cross found Andre Wright, but his effort went wide. Wright’s header followed, going straight at Thomas; a better placement would likely have resulted in a goal.
Dunbar then struck the apex of the crossbar and post, and Churchley had two further chances—one shot went well over, the other was blocked by the defence. Cam Walters then headed wide from another Churchley corner. At this stage, Evesham were in control, creating numerous opportunities.
Gosport threatened briefly when Beard made a good save following defensive lapses. Just before halftime, Bojang sent Dunbar down the right, who put a dangerous ball across the box, only for Gosport’s Charlie Wassmer to turn it over the goal.
Despite their dominance, Evesham were unable to convert chances, with the woodwork, excellent goalkeeping, and some poor finishing leaving them goalless at the interval. It could easily have been 2-0 to the Robins at the break.
Whatever was said in the Gosport dressing room at halftime had the desired effect, as they emerged with renewed conviction.
Early in the second half, Hisham Kasimu outpaced Bojang, rounded Beard, and slotted the ball into the bottom corner for the opening goal. Five minutes later, Dan Wooden capitalised on weak Evesham defending, sliding the ball under Beard to double Gosport’s lead.
This sparked Evesham into action. Dunbar beat the offside trap but could not get into position for a meaningful shot, and his snapshot was saved by Thomas. Andre Wright then scored out of nowhere, unleashing a powerful drive from 25 yards that struck the left post, bounced along the goal line, and deflected off the goalkeeper’s back into the net.
However, Evesham’s joy was short-lived. Seven minutes later, Gosport restored their two-goal advantage when a right-sided corner was met at the far post by an unmarked Joe Oastler, who guided the ball past Beard.
In injury time, Evesham came close again—a header from a Liam Hutt cross was well saved, and a deflected shot from Lewis Middleton was tipped over by the goalkeeper. Despite their efforts, the Robins were unable to reduce the deficit.
As a result, Evesham’s fate now rests on the outcome of the upcoming fixtures. A draw at Taunton Town and a Weymouth defeat at Berkhamsted would secure their survival.
Alternatively, if Taunton fail to win their midweek match, a victory over the Somerset side would guarantee safety for the Robins.
