BOSS Paul Collicutt has tasked Evesham United with gaining the promotion that would give retiring goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer “the send off he deserves”.

Popular stopper Sawyer announced in February that this season would be his last after 20 years with the likes of Salisbury, Gloucester City and the Robins.

On Saturday he was presented with a tankard by opponents and former club Mangotsfield United in recognition of his services to non-league football.

Six wins in seven matches, the latest being a 2-0 triumph at Mangotsfield, has resulted in Evesham knowing a draw from tomorrow's Southern League West finale at home to AFC Totton (Saturday, 3pm) would be enough to secure a play-off place.

And Collicutt’s message is simple: “Do it for Kev.”

“Mangotsfield’s gesture on Saturday proves how well he is thought of by so many people on the circuit,” said Collicutt.

“I know he is desperate to finish on a high and I know the lads will need no motivation to give him the send off he deserves.

“I will be so pleased and emotions will be very high if we can make the top six, not just for me but for Kev and the support we have taken here, there and everywhere this season.

“On Saturday we took more than 100 fans with us. It has been like that all season and would be a huge thank you to the people who have taken the time and spent a lot of hard-earned money on travelling to follow us.”

However, United’s boss is adamant nothing can be taken for granted.

“I would like to think we could have two more games left after Saturday but the harsh reality is if we don’t turn up, our season could be over,” he added.

“At Christmas, we would have been grateful just to be in the play-offs. There will be no presumptions about what we might or might not do.”

Midweek results largely aided fourth-placed Evesham's cause.

One point means the Robins cannot be caught and a defeat to Totton would still leave them with a chance of a coveted place in the top six.

For United to be cast out, Swindon Supermarine (Barnstaple Town, H), Didcot Town (Paulton Rovers, H) & Cirencester Town (Shortwood United, A) would all have to win.

Victory could still prove pivotal for Evesham with the highest-ranked clubs having home advantage in semi-finals on Wednesday May 2 and the final on Monday May 7. Each match is to be contested over one leg.

Third-placed Wimborne Town, one point ahead of Robins, finish at home to Slimbridge.
