WORCESTER Warriors fly-half Duncan Weir has missed out on a place in Scotland’s 39-man squad for the Six Nations.

The 27-year-old stand-off has been in fine form for Warriors this season as his 116-point haul in the Gallagher Premiership is only bettered by Leicester Tigers’ George Ford.

But his efforts from the tee were not enough to win over head coach Gregor Townsend who has named seven uncapped players in his squad.

Weir who trained with Scotland during the autumn internationals has won 27 caps but has not featured since March 2017.

His absence is a boost for Warriors though as they bid to steer clear of relegation trouble.

Speaking prior to Scotland’s squad announcement Worcester head coach Rory Duncan said: “Duncan spent a bit of time with Scotland's training squad a couple of months ago.

“It would be fantastic if he does get selected but if he doesn’t then we are very happy to have him here.”

Scotland finished last year’s championship in third place with three wins for the second time since five nations became six.

But Townsend is keen to see continued improvements from his side.

“They’ve a genuine desire to get better and reach their potential in what is a huge year for our sport,” Townsend said.

“In the past 18 months we’ve played 18 Test matches and have introduced 18 new players to Test-level rugby.

“Once again, our squad features players aiming to take that step, which is a testimony to their performances this season and the growing strength in depth of Scottish rugby.”
