FULL-BACK Melani Nanai’s hopes of playing in the Super Rugby play-offs were all but ended when his Blues side drew 22-22 with Bulls.

The Worcester Warriors signing produced an impressive performance at Eden Park as he racked up 98 metres which was almost twice as many as anyone else achieved in the match.

It means Nanai has now become the first player to reach the four-figure mark in metres made this term with 1,064 in 14 Super Rugby appearances.

Sixways-bound Nanai also beat six defenders, made three clean breaks and 12 carries but his efforts were not enough to secure his side victory.

Blues held a seven-point lead with five minutes left but a converted try levelled the scores.

Fly-half Harry Plummer then had an opportunity to win it at the death but his penalty drifted well wide.

Blues are bottom of the New Zealand Conference with two games remaining.

"It was a tough watch,” said Blues coach Leon MacDonald in an interview with Newshub.

“We were our own worst enemy for the majority of that game - good play and then error.

"We need to be better. We did enough to win the game, and I've said that a lot of times this year. But that doesn't count for anything on the scoreboard."
