DIRECTOR of rugby Alan Solomons revealed Worcester Warriors’ pre-season plans as his players look set to get back to work.

After a six-week break to recover from the exertions of the 2018-19 campaign Solomons’ troops will return to Sixways on July 1 to begin their training regime.

New signings Graham Kitchener, Richard Palframan, Conor Carey, Caleb Montgomery, Jono Kitto and Matt Moulds are all due to arrive and meet their new team-mates.

Due to the Rugby World Cup this autumn, the Gallagher Premiership season will not kick off until October 19 — eight weeks later than last term.

Instead England’s top-flight clubs will begin the campaign with four rounds of the Premiership Cup, starting on September 21.

The changes have created an added challenge for Solomons to keep his team in good condition ahead of the long-awaited season.

WARRIORS FORWARD CALLED UP FOR ENGLAND TRAINING CAMP

Solomons said he would give his men two week-long breaks over the course of the next 10 weeks before heading off to Spain for a training camp.

“Our plans are in place,” Solomons said.

“We start on July 1 and in those first four weeks there will be a focus on our conditioning.

“We will then have a week’s break and over the next four weeks we will start to change the balance in training.

“At the end of that four-week period we will go on camp in Spain and then we will have another week’s break.”

Solomons confirmed his squad would be returning to the training base in Valencia where they spent a week last summer.

“The training camp was excellent last year,” Solomons said.

“The facilities were really good and the players enjoyed it.

“The difference this year is that we are going a little bit later so it will be a rugby-focused week by the time we get to camp.

“I think it is good for team bonding and it will be very positive in preparation for next season.”

Warriors notched a club record-equalling nine Premiership wins in the 2018-19 campaign as they finished 10th on 46 points.

But Solomons has urged his players to raise the bar in a bid to “overcome our inconsistency”.

“It was a very positive end to last season,” Solomons said.

“We had really good wins in three of those last four games.

“I thought we played fantastically against Sale which was our best game of the season and then did really well to beat a strong Gloucester side the following week.

“We were disappointed with how we went at Northampton although it was perhaps understandable coming off the back of two big games.

“But we finished with a bang against Saracens.”

On areas to improve next season, Solomons added: “I think what we need to do is set ourselves very high standards and we need to maintain those.

“That will hopefully overcome our inconsistency.”
