CARRI MUNDANE is the genius behind the fashion label known as Cassette Playa. However, despite the name, her designs are anything but mundane. Taking her inspiration from both real and virtual worlds, Mundane truly has created a psychedelic monster.

Immediately after graduating from the University of Westminster in 2007, where she studied fashion design, Mundane launched her first collection at a London nightclub; a very appropriate setting for the clothes on show. Although her clothing is presented as 'menswear', Mundane calls her designs 'mixed-wear', as the baggy and often over-sized clothes can also be worn by women. The designs of Cassette Playa are wild and vibrant, kaleidoscopic and energetic, and are positively full of colour and lively imagery; it is no wonder that her clothes are a very popular choice on the nu-rave dance scene. From pixellated jump-suits to tie-dye jackets and neon-orange trainers, it is sometimes hard to believe that you are looking at solid clothing and not something straight out of a video game.

And this is just what she wants us to think. Mundane draws her inspiration very much from the virtual reality of video games, the internet and mobile phones and in a great many of her designs this is exactly what springs to mind; something surreal and otherworldly. The pattens and colours are loud and defined, and occasionally you will come across a design on a t-shirt that would be very much at home in a Super Mario video game. Although she is globally minded-her clothing being big in Tokyo-Mundane finds herself feeding off the youth culture that buzzes about the British streets, and from the clubbing scene, music and art of modern Britain, especially from the inhabitants of London, the city where she was born. Cassette Playa is not only popular among ravers and fashion addicts; Mundane has designed outfits for several of the top stars, including Dizzee Rascal, Rihanna and Nelly Furtado.

Despite their bizarre appearance, the designs of Cassette Playa are born as much from very real things as from the surreal. The drug culture and rave scene play their part in inspiring Mundane, as is obvious in the psychedelic colours and pattens that are splashed all over trousers and jackets. Although many of her designs look like the products of an explosion in a paint factory, many are printed with carefully designed graphics, the colours and shapes well thought out.

Carri Mundane is fearlessly creative, and above all, very proud to be British, finding herself constantly amazed and encouraged by the strong attitudes and individuals she surrounds herself with. Cassette Playa clothing is for the strong-minded, the slightly zany, and above all, the brave.
