A BUSY weekend saw Bretforton's ladies continue their unbeaten run in the league and then make progress in the National Trophy.

Saturday saw them defeat Lansdown by a solitary Sophie Corbett goal and 24 hours later they returned home from Whitchurch in Shropshire with a 2-1 knockout triumph.

Vicky Webb had to be at her best to keep a clean sheet in the league although she was helped by a terrific team effort that earned a reward of a second half winner.

Andrea Cole struck a short corner out to Jane Wheeler who neatly slipped the ball to Corbett who fired it into the corner of the Lansdown goal.

Lansdown had an excellent chance to grab an equaliser with keeper Webb drawn out position and it looked only as if the striker only had to put the ball in the goal but she delayed her shot and Wheeler cleared off the line.

Unlucky The visitors made a flying start and were unlucky not to score twice in the opening ten minutes when Deb Slatter was denied by the home goalkeeper.

Corbett also went close with a rasping shot that flew narrowly wide before Whitchurch hit back and Webb watched two well-struck shots fly over the top of her goal.

Bretforton broke the deadlock after 25 minutes when an excellent run by Kim Payne down the right wing where she linked up well with Lisa Workman ended with Payne striking home a loose ball that she had followed into the D.

The second half saw Whitchurch come out strong and only great play from defenders Wheeler, Bobbie Handley, Liz Murray-White and Sarah Cook kept the visitors in the game.

Webb again excelled in goal and earned the player of the match vote after a series of fine stops including a full-length diving save to divert the ball wide.

However, she was beaten but the Vale girls didn't panic and, when Murray-White and Payne combined to find Gilly Wright, her cross was converted into an open goal by Corbett.

Only 12 minutes remained and Whitchurch stepped the pace up again and it took all of Bret's resolve and team spirit to keep them out.

The hosts came closest to levelling at a short corner but Corbett, Wheeler, Handley, Murray-White, Cook and keeper Webb ensured the ball was cleared just as the full time whistle was blown.

Bretforton face a visit to North Notts in the next round on January 14.

Bretforton II 2, Dursley 0 GILLY Wright inspired Bretforton to a second successive league victory with an impressive display that saw her scoring both goals.

The first half was goalless but Bretforton will consider themselves unlucky not to have scored when Bernie Amphlett's effort hit the frame of the goal.

Fiona Lovecy made two outstanding saves while Lesley McKinnon and FiFi Trixabelle in defence made some vital interceptions.

The breakthrough didn't come until well into the second half when they were awarded a penalty corner. Wright sent the ball short to Kate Williams who made the initial strike before Wright pounced on the rebound to find the net at the second attempt.

The second goal came from a long corner when Ceri Barber found Williams. Sarah Bragg picked up the cross and beat the keeper only for the ball to be stopped on the line by the last defender but the hungry Wright was on hand to push the ball over the line.
