TRAFFIC lights on Abbey Bridge will be removed over the Bank Holiday weekend to help ease traffic flow.

Worcestershire County Council has decided to remove the lights on what is expected to be a busy weekend for the town.

The move follows criticism from drivers last weekend when Evesham was gridlocked for long periods as construction on the bridge took place at the same time as re-lining on the bypass bringing traffic to a halt.

To help keep any disruption to a minimum these traffic lights are only in operation outside of busy rush-hour periods from 9.30am until 3.30pm.

They will be removed over the Bank Holiday weekend before continuing again next week during the same hours from Tuesday to Friday.

Peter Blake, Worcestershire County Council's Head of Integrated Transport, said: "The project to replace the Abbey Bridge and Viaduct is continuing to progress with demolition work now taking place on parts of the structure. Whilst this is happening four-way temporary traffic lights at the junction of Abbey Road, Pershore Road and Waterside are needed to ensure the safety in the area.

"The County Council makes every effort to co-ordinate any works taking place on the highways it manages and this will continue as the Abbey Bridge and Viaduct scheme progresses."
