WE are again approaching November 5 and the annual bonfire celebrations.
Apart from the fizz, crackle and sounds of fireworks, how many of our children – or even the adults – know exactly what we are celebrating, or why?
Guido Fawkes, or Guy Fawkes as he is generally known, was discovered attempting to blow up Parliament on November 5, 1605, and this day has been remembered and celebrated ever since.
Why? Because Parliament was greatly respected by all, over many generations and it was considered a heinous crime!
Sadly, for the past 50 years, Parliament is now no longer respected and a new ‘Guy Fawkes’ trying to repeat the action would undoubtedly be heaped with praise, plaudits – and celebratory fireworks!
How times change!
