Free cancer information day next month
4:38pm Friday 7th February 2014 in News
PEOPLE in Worcestershire suffering from cancer along with their friends and family are being offered advice and support at a free information day next month.
The Health and Wellbeing day hosted by Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support will be held at The Pear Tree Inn and Country Hotel in Smite, near Worcester on Thursday, March 27.
Healthcare professionals and people with experience of the disease will be on hand to meet attendees, including Macmillan volunteer Vicky Stock, who has undergone treatment for breast cancer.
She said: "I was only 30 when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer and initially I felt quite alone, but I have since realised there is a lot support out there once you know where to look.
"I started volunteering for Macmillan in 2010 and have also supported them by giving speeches at events, helping out at information stalls and by fundraising for them.
"I recently joined the Macmillan Buddy Scheme for Worcestershire and currently mentor/co-mentor two people."
The event will include workshops run by organisations and support groups.
Macmillan cancer information and support service lead at Worcestershire Royal Hospital Kay Tandy said: “When people finish treatment they can often be left feeling quite isolated and unsure about the future.
"This event is specially tailored to provide support to people who have been affected by cancer so they can go away from the event knowing where to go locally for more support and feeling empowered to live well.”
Places are limited and booking is essential.
