Choose well to avoid lengthy wait for treatment this bank holiday

WORCESTERSHIRE health organisations are advising people to go to the right place should they get injured or suffer from a minor illness.

As people in Worcestershire make the most of the May Day Bank Holiday with a spot of DIY, gardening or a BBQ they are being encouraged to choose the right option if they become unwell.

Dr Martin Lee, medical director for NHS England in Worcestershire, said: "Bank Holiday weekends are always a busy time for the NHS and particularly for A&E departments that are seen as the first port of call.

"Many patients end up with long waits in A&E when they suffer a minor illness, such as a stomach upset when they could be treated more quickly by seeking advice from their local pharmacist or even by themselves with basic self-care and first aid.

"NHS 111 can give fast, reliable telephone advice and arrange for patients see an out of hours GP if necessary. This will be more convenient and allow A&E departments to see those people who most urgently need their care."

Patients are also encouraged to visit nhs.uk/Conditions/Pages/hub.aspx for advice on treating common conditions.
