THE five schools of Pershore are joining up once again to hold a special Armistice Day service on Tuesday at Pershore Commemorative Garden.

The event is being organised by the Royal Naval Association honorary secretary Trudy Burge who was instrumental in the design and creation of the garden in 2011.

For the first two years, pupils from Pershore High School laid a wreath on Remembrance Sunday in Pershore Abbey, but last year it was decided to create a special service each Armistice Day and open the event up to all the other schools.

Taking part in the service will be pupils from the high school, Abbey Park Middle School, Abbey Park First School, Cherry Orchard First School and Holy Redeemer Primary School. Poems from the Pershore Poppy Appeal poetry competition will be read out while there will be three readers and two wreath layers. PA equipment so everyone can hear the readings is being loaned for the event by Pete Challenger of Evesham Hospital Radio.

"Last year's service was the first time we've done something on this scale with all the schools at one time and it was a resounding success. I think all the adults who attended, particularly the veterans were deeply moved," said Mrs Burge. "I wanted to create a service tailored purely towards the youngsters so that they have the opportunity to learn about Remembrance by taking an active role in their own service."

The schools are meeting at the Commemorative Garden at 9.30am.

Around the Evesham district, Remembrance Sunday services include: BROADWAY: Meet at 10.45am at the war memorial followed by a service at St Michael's Church. EVESHAM: meet at the war memorial in Abbey Park where the service will commence with the sounding of the Last Post at 10.59 and followed by a service at All Saints' Church.

NORTON: at 11am at St Egwin's Church with a two minutes' silence and wreath laying at The Lychgate at 11am. The names of the five Canadian airmen who died when their Wellington bomber crashed in the village during WW2 will be read out. PERSHORE: Meet outside Pershore Leisure Centre at 10am. The parade will be led by the Band of the West Midlands and will include members of the Royal British Legion & Women’s Section, Royal Naval Association, Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Cadets, Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Brownies and St John’s Ambulance and end at Pershore Abbey at 10.50am. The salute is taken outside the town hall immediately afterwards.
