SCRATCHED paintwork shouldn't be a problem for a Harvington retailer now that he has installed cycle stands outside his shop.

Cary Shergill, who runs the Premier convenience store in Leys Road was concerned about damage to the store's walls and approached the parish council for advice. They directed him towards the county council who agreed to supply cycle racks.

"Everyone was leaning their cycles and scooters against the wall and paint kept coming off. When we went to Worcestershire County Council they provided the racks free of charge and we installed them. Now cyclists have a place to park their cycles and everyone is happy," said Mr Shergill.

The funding for the four cycle stands came from a planning agreement relating to a local development.

There are 10 more cycle stands available for the Harvington area and the county council is inviting applications from any local busiensses, schools or employers.

CouncillorJohn Smith, Worcestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "These stands provide secure and convenient parking for cyclists, helping to contribute towards increased levels of sustainable travel in the area."
