THE organisation running community and mental health services in Worcestershire has saved nearly £1 million of taxpayer’s money by making savings in the cost of running its buildings and facilities.

Figures released this week show Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust saved £930,000 over the past 12 months through its money-saving SMARTER scheme.

The money has been saved through a number of initiatives including replacing boilers, improving insulation and relocating staff working in smaller building to some of the trust’s larger sites.

The organisation’s head of estates and facilities management Mark Fenton said many of the buildings owned by the trust were older with higher than average maintenance and running costs.

“The trust allocates substantial funding each year to help maintain high quality environments for patients,” he said.

“We are committed to looking for ways to further reduce our estate related costs in ways which do not have a negative impact on patient care and on building on the savings identified and delivered so far.”

The trust has also reduced its carbon footprint by 842 tonnes over the past three years.
