THE Regal Cinema is putting the controversial cancellation of Jim Davidson behind it and looking forward to welcoming comedian Stephen K Amos to its stage.

The art deco cinema in Evesham was snubbed by former Celebrity Big Brother winner Davidson on January 31 when he decided not to perform just hours before he was set to appear claiming the 7ft 6ins stage was too high.

But the owners of the popular venue in Port Street have moved on in more than one way and are looking forward to welcoming Amos, who they say has confirmed he is happy to perform on the stage.

Laurence Wiper, manager of the Regal, said: "We have moved on in two respects. We have contacted 99 percent of all the customers due on January 31, except for a few that are on holiday. The support we have received has been phenomenal and a real boost to the Regal.

"The performance by Stephen K Amos is confirmation the Regal does work for stand up comedy and music."

Mr Wiper added that they were now looking forward to welcoming Stephen K Amos on Friday, February 20, whose brand of comedy is very positive.

"I am really excited," he said. "I think it's really fitting because he specialises in a particular brand of comedy, which is uplifting and feel good, working with the audience in a positive way.

"Lots of other stand up comedians we have had are a bit more abrupt. He is a fitting comedian given the context of last weekend."

The comedian who has appeared on Have I Got News For you, Mock The Week and BBC 1’s Live at The Apollo will be performing from 8pm on the stage at the Regal.

Meanwhile Davidson will be bringing his No Further Action tour to Evesham on Sunday, March 29, from 7.30pm, this time at Evesham Arts Centre.

Tickets priced £15, the show will be aid of service veterans charity 'Care after Combat', will be on sale shortly from Evesham Almonry, Abbey Road, by calling 01386 446944 or by visiting EveshamArtsCentre.co.uk.
