A SERVING Worcestershire county councillor has been selected to contest a parliamentary seat in the General Election.

The Labour Party has selected Robin Lunn for Mid-Worcestershire, where he will take on Tory candidate Nigel Huddleston as an outsider.

Cllr Lunn first won his County Hall seat in 2009, representing Redditch North, and will try to turn over a 15,864 Conservative majority.

He also fought the seat in 2010, coming in third place behind current MP Sir Peter Luff and Liberal Democrat Margaret Rowley.

Cllr Lunn's campaign is being launched this coming Tuesday, March 3 in a rally at St Ecgwins Hall, in Evesham High Street with former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith.

She said: "Robin is an excellent candidate who has served as a county councillor for six years."

Cllr Lunn said: "I am delighted to have been selected as the Labour Candidate for Mid Worcestershire.

"I have lived in this area for 22 years. I know Worcestershire, its people and its needs well.

"There are major areas which the present Government has failed to address - the NHS, education, low wages and the poverty which is driving people to foodbanks.

"Britain can do better than this, and I look forward to serving the people in this constituency effectively in the next parliament."

Sir Peter is retiring at the General Election, with Mr Huddleston, an executive at Google, favourite to retain the seat for the party.

He will also face a challenge from UKIP, with Richard Keel selected as its candidate last week, and the Liberal Democrats, with Wychavon Councillor Margaret Rowley contesting it for the third time in a row.
