HOLIDAYMAKERS in Worcestershire planning an Easter getaway are being warned of a series of disruptions to train services over the Bank Holiday weekend.

This morning Network Rail announced a series of major engineering works to take place from Good Friday, April 3 until Easter Monday, April 6.

Although services in Worcestershire will not be affected, the work will impact on trains running through the county to London and the south east.

All trains in and out of London Euston will be cancelled for the entire four-day weekend while services to and from London Paddington, Reading, Slough and Watford Junction will also be affected, with replacement busses in place in the majority of cases.

Network Rail chief executive Mark Carne said the extensive series of work had been scheduled for the Bank Holiday weekend as rail services were generally quieter during public holidays.

"We are acutely conscious that many people want to use the railway during the holidays to reunite with their friends and families, which is why the vast majority of the network is running normally over the holiday period but there will be disruption for some," he said.

"I'd like to apologise to any passengers whose plans are affected by our improvement work, but I hope they will understand that this is a quieter time on the railway and we want to minimise the overall impact of these vital projects on passengers.”

Mr Carne added the organisation has plans in place to avoid a repeat of the delays experienced by travellers over Christmas after work over-ran, resulting in both Paddington and King’s Cross stations being closed for at least part of the day on Saturday, December 27.

The work will be carried out by an army of 14,000 workers and is part of a £36 billion scheme of upgrades across the country’s rail network which Network Rail claim will ultimately result in an improved service for passengers.

Other areas which will be affected include Dorking in Surrey, Crewe in Cheshire, the area between Lancaster and Carlisle, Cumbria, as well as between Peterborough and Ely in Cambridgeshire.
