A COFFEE morning arranged by the family of Pershore community stalwart Ted Annis, who died last year, raised £1,010.55 for cancer charity Macmillan.

The event at the Pershore Naval Social Club in the High Street on Saturday, September 26, was part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which saw similar events held throughout Worcestershire and across the country in aid of the charity.

The impressive sum was raised through sales of cakes, jams and other homemade treats as well as a grand raffle.

Chairman of the town’s Royal Naval Association (RNA) Terry Brimmell said he was delighted by how much had been raised.

“The success of this event has been because of the hard work and determination of the late Ted Annis' niece who, despite being very poorly battling liver cancer for the past two years, has rallied the family to work together to raise this terrific amount of money to help others suffering the same plight,” he said.

“To do such a thing in her time of greatest personal need is truly remarkable and I'm so glad that so many people turned up today to give her their support.

“Despite being so ill through all the treatment, she has always taken the time to think of others and I only hope the turnout today goes a small way to show how much we appreciate her.

“Many of Ted's family have been affected by cancer and likewise in the RNA, we too have had so many members over the past 13 years battling the disease.

“Therefore we know only too well how much organisations such as Macmillan are needed when people are enduring their darkest hours.”

“I would like to express my thanks to everyone who supported this event, particularly those who donated cakes and raffle prizes.

Mr Brimmell also thanked readers of the Evesham Journal for their support following a previous article about the event – one of whom had donated a teddy bear which will be auctioned off to raise more funds for Macmillan.
