THE quartet of Vicky and Ian Watkins and Jen and Geoff Doran took top spot in the Captain's Charity Mixed Golden Ball competition at Broadway.

With three scores counting on every hole, a concerted effort was needed from all of the 15 teams on the course and such was the intensity of competition that only a single separated the top two teams.

This was followed by a fun competition with members playing with their non golfing partners - the golfers played the course and the non golfers did the putting.

The winning duo was Mr and Mrs Vic Tofts with Graham Hale and his partner in second place.

Earlier in the day, the men took part in a pairs event and the winners were Paul Handy and Sam McPherson whose 48 points were three more than runners-up Chris Gosden and Richard Tate.

More than £600 was raised for the Captain's Charity, Salters Hill.

Les Carter was in the prizes again at the County Seniors Scratch Cup competition at Bristol and Clifton last Thursday.

The veteran carded identical rounds of 81 to take third place just two shots adrift of winner Hugh Purvis (Long Ashton).

Other ladies results - Trophy competition: 1 Sally Campbell 34pts (cb); 2 Valerie de la Pena 34.
