HUNDREDS of people flocked to enjoy Pershore Fire Station's annual open day on Bank Holiday Monday.

Around 500 visitors enjoyed a rare chance to ride a fire engine many even tried their hand at using the powerful hoses.

Meanwhile, Pershore firefighters were on hand to meet members of the public and show them piece of equipment they use in everyday work.

The day also had an educational twist, with staff providing fire safety advice as well as hosting demonstrations and games.

Station Commander Phil Berry, of Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, said: "It was a beautiful sunny bank holiday with plenty of visitors enjoying the many demonstrations including a road traffic collision, house fire demonstration, plus the local Young Firefighters Association showing off their skills.

"It was also an opportunity for the public to have a look around their Fire Station and to engage with firefighters for fire safety advice."

A total of £730 was raised for various charities on the day, including the Fire Fighters Charity.

Commander Berry added: "I would like to put on record a special thank you to FF Dale Jenkins, FF Nathan Smith and CC Becky Valender, whose hard work and enthusiasm over many months made it a very successful day."

The Defford Road-based fire station welcomes in the public to the event every year, and this year opened between 12pm and 4pm.

The event was supported by an array of businesses including WL Browns, PJ Nicholls, Rivers Leisure Centre, Oggles and the Plough and Harrow.

This year's open day coincided with Pershore Carnival, which saw crowds of people flock to town to enjoy an array of colourful activities.
