EVESHAM has begun the countdown to Christmas after hundreds of people attended as the Christmas lights were switched on.

The town came to life in Market Place on Saturday (November 26) after a procession led by Santa, Evesham's town crier and the Mayor of Evesham Fred Kaler.

Evesham counted down to the switch-on throughout the afternoon, with various entertainment on offer.

Sid and Scrat from popular comedy film Ice Age met with fans at Riverside Shopping Centre during the day, whilst Santa was in his grotto until 3pm.

A Christmas market and festive bar was also open throughout the day to help people get into the Christmas mood, with rides for children and Morris dancing also keeping the visitors entertained.

The festive day begun with U3A Choir performing some festive choral favourites for the watching crowds.

Solo singer Betsy Harmony followed before Santa and his reindeer paraded up Bridge Street into Market Place to meet Evesham youngsters.

A reed and brass and performed some popular Christmas songs before The Evesham Community Choir performed some sing along tunes.

The Christmas lights countdown took place at 5.30 before the lights were switched on and fireworks were let off.

The day finished with Satellite Down performing rock and roll music before the lights switch-on closed at 6.30pm.

Wychavon District Council also got into the Christmas spirit during the day, offering free parking after 2pm in Evesham’s short and long-stay car parks.
