A SCOUT group is appealing to the public to help their hut to be accessible to disabled children.

1st Pershore Scout Group has recently installed a £6,000 ramp to help disabled children to enter their hut.

However, the group have ran out of funds and still need to add disabled access doors, valued at £1,200.

Hayley Tomkins, secretary of the scout group, said: "Two years ago we started to build our scout hut in Pershore.

"We have fundraised over £50,000 to get the hut to where it is now.

"We have in the last six months fundraised and got £6,000 from generous donations and grants from local bodies to create a disabled access ramp for the hut.

"It has always been our dream to be able to accommodate disabled children at the hut and to be able to offer local disabled groups a space to meet if they are struggling to find a suitable venue.

"However it has cost us £6,000 to build the ramp to the specification required.

"This leaves us with a really awful problem, we have no money left to buy the disabled access doors to be able to access the hut. This is so frustrating as we are so nearly there."

The hut is based at Pershore College and is now used to accommodate the beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers.

Ms Tomkins' son Kaiden May has hypermobility syndrome which affects his balance and without the new doors, he will not be able to join the beavers when he is eligible in two years.

She added: "The stairs at the front of the building are quite big steps and we want to make the disabled access our main entrance to ensure that the children no longer have to negotiate the big steps at the front of the hut."
