A THREE manual pipe organ will be installed at Pershore Abbey.

An open public meeting has been called by the church council to inform and discuss this major development with everyone interested in the music, architecture or heritage of Pershore Abbey.

At the meeting at 7.30pm on Monday November 27, those involved in the project will review visuals, designs and funding for the new Italian organ.

Numerous heritage and church organisations have been involved over the years in agreeing the choice and position of the organ, which is expected to cost around £850,000.

It will be made by Fratelli Ruffati of Padova (near Venice) and replaces a long-gone Walker/Nicholson pipe organ which was probably played by Edward Elgar on his many visits to the abbey.

Co-ordinating the purchase and fundraising is an expert committee headed by Sir Michael Perry.

David Long from the abbey team commented: "It has been a long, complicated process to reach this stage. We look forward to the day when a great pipe organ once again thrills concert audiences, congregations and wedding families."
