A TEENAGER has picked up the young volunteer of the year after raising £3,000 for charity.

At the Wychavon Community Recognition Awards held at Peopleton Village Hall on Thursday March 8, the award went to Kiaragh Brown aged 13 from Sheriffs Lench and going to school in Evesham.

Last year, Kiaragh raised over £3,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

Nominated by the Tesco community champion, Lindsay Roach and using her signature red dress from last year as Evesham's Carnival Queen, she was seen at many local events and at Tesco, bag packing, singing and wrapping things on Valentines Day.

She also held her own 'Red Tombola' and 'Wear Something Red' events at St Egwin's C of E Middle School where she is a pupil.

Councillor Liz Eyre, chairman of the council who presented the award said: "She was a shining example of how giving some of your time and effort can help youngsters help others and make a difference in their community.

"Kiaragh has a friend with a heart condition and he was her inspiration to choose this charity. She also campaigned for DEfib installations in rural villages to help the ageing demographic profile of some members of our community.

"She underwent training to use a defibrillator and did her First Aid courses with St Johns Ambulance.

"This year, after the loss of her beloved grandad, Poppa Jim, her focus is on raising awareness and funds for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

"Kiaragh and her 'Purple Possie' will be popping up at Tesco and around town from the 8th-10th June."

As the current Evesham Young Musician of the Year for voice, Kiargh is available to sing at events in return for a donation to Pancreatic Cancer.
