Plans to build hundreds of homes on land where human remains were found have been revealed.

Taylor Wimpey has submitted a planning application to Wychavon District Council to build 200 homes on the allocated housing site off Boat Lane in Evesham.

Earlier this year, human remains, believed to date back to the medieval period, were found on the site and Wychavon’s planning committee consequently deferred Taylor Wimpey’s previous planning application for the site.

The home construction company says it has since undertaken assessments and engaged with key stakeholders, including Historic England, to ensure the final development “respects the history of the site”.

Joe Blincoe from Taylor Wimpey said: “The archaeology and heritage of the site is of the utmost importance to us and we’re committed to continued engagement with council officers, local stakeholders and Historic England to ensure the best outcome is delivered for both the site and Evesham.”

Taylor Wimpey’s site adds that the plans will take local heritage assets into account, including the 800-year-old Abbot Chryyton’s Wall.

Furthermore, any new archaeological finds are to be preserved and shared with local museums and schools.

The development of 200 family and affordable homes, which will be known as ‘Chyryton Grange’, was granted outline planning permission in 2019.

As well as layouts and materials for the new homes, the latest application includes a community orchard, a children’s play area, and a network of pedestrian and cycle links with the town centre.

Taylor Wimpey says it has also been working with the Hampton Bridge group to align plans for a new pedestrian river crossing with those of Chyrtyon Grange to ensure both can be delivered.

Mr Blincoe added: “We are happy to be submitting a revised application for Chyryton Grange which will help to deliver much-needed family housing.

“It’s great news that 40 per cent of the new homes will be affordable, helping create a thriving and diverse community in this beautiful location on the banks of the River Avon.”
